Humanity
the fifth of July
a time for reflection on
what we have become
–
saguaro cactus-
a small sneaker
in the sand
the fifth of July
a time for reflection on
what we have become
–
saguaro cactus-
a small sneaker
in the sand
canons and mortars-
our patriotic fervor
lights up the night sky
–
fireworks
the dog hides
under my bed
above the highway
a red tailed hawk circling
riding the thermals
–
hunting-
an osprey plummets
to the sea
waiting for the sea-
an ancient mariner mourns
the arriving tide
–
bedraggled skies-
limp with rain over
an unkempt sea
a sidewalk cafe-
lunch forgotten as a crow
lands on my table
–
al fresco-
a rain drop
in my coffee
born of the mountains
falling over age worn stone
scattering the sun
–
summer solstice-
roaring water
fills my ears
as day turns to night
the sun gives her dying light
to the mountain tops
–
mountain peaks-
aging temples
streaked with snow
the bathroom mirror-a message written in steamappears in your hand–starlit noon-steam poursfrom off the rocks

low rolling thunder-
lightning crawls across the sky
rattling windows
–
summer night-
the sky lit by
heat lightning
offshore thunderstorms-
an old salt returns to the
bosom of the sea
–
crimson skies
a funeral boat
adrift and alight
