July 2021 – Iron Haiku

highway median-
long neglected grasses sway
with the passing cars
–
towering light pole-
a red tailed hawk
spots it’s prey

leaves soft underfoot-
in the dawning mist great oaks
fade into the sky
–
blackbird-
morning fog
through the trees

whitewashed beach shanties-
a path of crushed coral ends
at the ebbing tide
–
salt air-
a gull’s cry
above the surf

forgotten pastures-
the gradual decline of
an old farmer’s wall
–
fieldstone-
grey lichens
untrodden

under a blood moon-
take my name from off your lips
and release my soul
–
wet ink-
my name
bound to you

the morning commute-
unexpected lavender blossoms
along the roadside
–
traffic-
a glimpse of
an osprey

flowering milkweed-
monarchs unfurl their new wings
to catch the sunlight
–
iridescence-
concentric rainbows
on the pavement

the lamplighter’s mac-
a thin scrim of london fog
coats the cobblestones
–
horseshoes-
echoes off
stone walls

by a country lane-
a hand lettered wooden sign
farm fresh eggs for sale
–
fresh eggs-
a card table
in the shade

early morning dew-
a spider’s silken shift work
floats above the grass
–
last night’s rain-
pearls rest on
tatted lace
